We invite you to join oil painters from far and wide to dive into Alice’s Wonderland in Provence, France. This workshop is designed for painters at all levels… Beginner Painters (she loves them), Intermediate Painters (so much to share) and Advanced Painters (she can push you to new levels).

Your time in Provence will blend the creative and the spiritual, putting you in the heart of the very French countryside that inspired (in spirit!) the likes of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne. Alice Williams’ legendary grounds and gardens alone would inspire the most stoic onlooker! You will experience an outer beauty that will lead you on an inward journey, pushing you ever closer to your inner artist; a much-needed joining with our deeper selves which, for many of us, goes unfulfilled and unexplored during the rush of our daily lives.

Learn tips from Alice on how to bottle your inspiration and access it on your terms, rather than waiting for the muse to grace you. She will share her process — honed over many years — for showing up at the canvas and doing the work. If this is your first time attending a workshop with Alice, prepare to laugh (a lot) and settle into goodhearted company. You will find no artsy air of superiority here, just exuberant fun with life and paint! Whether you’re a seasoned professional artist, are newly accessing your creativity, or oil paint is a new medium you want to explore, this workshop is a safe space for you to find the expansion you seek.

Alice is special! She is passionate, has a lot to share and is a gifted teacher, garden designer, speaker to plants and writer. She possesses an instinct of knowing where you are in your process and feeding you what moves you closer to helping mine your creativity and freedom.

About Alice Williams

Alice Williams paints, laughs, gardens, and lives with an ease and awakened wonder which infuse the very fibers of her canvas and inspire every stroke of her brush. Taking in an Alice Williams painting is a meditation; transporting, comforting, inspiring, and revealing. Luring one in ever more deeply with its color play and thoughtful composition, her rhythmic strokes delightfully blur the sharp edges of reality, and take the viewer into a lovely, timeless, secret world they never even knew they were missing.

There is no mistaking an Alice Williams painting. Post-impressionist in style for over 40 years, she makes it look easy, but that perfectly unfinished, relaxed precision is the result of a lifelong love affair with the arts and dedicated study with many of the great American artists of our time. She studied Fine Arts at Columbia College, Furman University, and Clemson University in South Carolina, then went on to study under Al Green, John Howard Kintsler, and Albert Handel, to name a few. It was in Atlanta that she found the great Russian painters (and brothers), Constantine and Roman Chatov, who quickly became her most influential teachers. Alice spent 3 days a week for 3 years under their tutelage, which led to a lucrative 12 years working as a portraiture artist, and her eventual discovery of her own, very personal creative expression. The legacy from Chatov to Robert Brackman to Robert Henri is carried on through Alice’s consistent, prolific work.

Alice believes deeply in “paying it forward.” She has a profound sense of gratitude for her teachers, as well as a sense of obligation to pass on the wisdom of the lineage of painters from whom she has absorbed so much dedication, passion, technique, and respect for the tradition. Alice shares these lessons with her own experience, personality, and special blend of maternal nurturing and brazen honesty in the painting workshops she hosts each year. She passes down the ritual of the group critique from her time in Dallas — this is where she learned “when to stop painting.”

“I believe in the power of good; the power of good people.” – Alice Williams

Alice’s Farmhouse

Having visited our good friend, Caline de Gasquet, in Aix en Provence for many years, I always found I wanted to stay. My mantra to my husband Don was, “Why do we still live in Atlanta, Georgia? The kids are grown and this is a new time in our lives… Tell me why?” I knew we could live where the sunlight is strong and shines a lot, where the air is clear and dry, where the food is beyond delicious (and French!)… fresh and locally grown… where the architecture is old and so inspiring… where the pace of life is slower and seemingly more genuine.

I had said this enough that in August of 2011 he replied, “Ok, why not?” So, in March of 2012, we packed up nine suitcases, two carry-ons, the cats (Ellie Belly and Priscilla) and did it. We moved to Provence!

This was my dream and now I can share it with you. We bought a mas (farmhouse) in 2015, renovated it for three months while living in the cuisine d’ete (aka our pool cottage sans bathroom), and I started tweaking the garden. Our life here is pretty much heaven on earth. Don calls it “Just south of Heaven’s Gate” and I call it le paradis. No matter what you call it, we love sharing it and hope your stay here will be magical, too!

For the painter in you, there will plenty of inspiring subject matter to choose from, be it several interiors in the house or garden scenes… there is no limit of potential paintings for you to hang in your paradise home!

Le Domaine De La Carraire

Between Lourmarin and Lauris, and just a few minutes drive from us is a charming chambre d’hote, La Domaine de la Carriere, complete with centuries old Platane trees and an old basin good enough to paint. It is an eighteenth century family bastide (home) with beautiful rooms indoors and surrounded by lavender and olive groves, a charming pool, gardens and guest house. Complete with beautiful vistas and the quiet French countryside, this will be one of the special homes we will welcome you to when you arrive.

The French Cuisine – Love It!

We can’t wait to share our favorite cuisine with you! At the end of a full day of painting in the fresh Provencal air, who doesn’t want to relax and enjoy an authentic local chef-prepared meal? And you will enjoy yours in the famous gardens chez Alice, under the stars and the influence of art, French wine, and good company. We have engaged talented local chefs (who also have become dear friends) to bring the culinary inspiration that will make your trip complete. Christel, Ariane, Paul, Nicolas and Andi will take into consideration any dietary restrictions and provide you with breathtaking meals you will cherish forever. These delectable meals are a hallmark of the Alice Williams Provence workshop experience.

We will also enjoy visits to several of Alice’s favorite restaurants in the area. Get ready to enjoy the best of this cherished region!

Lourmarin Village

There are some scenes here in Provence that I keep going back to for inspiration and feel compelled to paint again and again; either the subject is very important to me in our new life in France or the subject matter needs revisiting. The village of Lourmarin, one of the most picturesque villages in France (especially painted from the back side), is one of them. Being able to set up easily is most important and here we can set up under the olive orchard or pine grove and paint away without being disturbed. This is why I take workshop artists here to paint: great subject matter, glorious light, and shade from the heat of the day… such a delight! There is an abundance of stunning painting spots inside the village as well!

Ariane’s Olive Grove and Farmhouse

In 2017 I attended my first olive picking at the home of a new French friend, Ariane de Vriesze, whom I had met through our wonderful friend, Christel. It was an unforgettable experience and this was my introduction to Ariane who has over 200 olive trees and a fabulously ancient farmhouse set in the hills very close to where we live.

This workshop will include a day painting in Ariane’s world. Whether it be a sunlit olive grove or capturing her country house (bastide) inside or out, it will be a unique and memorable painting experience. A truly special and amazing lunch will be served by her sons,

Paul and Nicolas, who are connoisseurs of the magical local cuisine.

Read more about this adventure in my blog.

Village of Cucuron

Spend a day in Cucuron, a favorite village of ours in the South Luberon, where we eat lunch quite often. Spectacular and oh-so-paintable because of its huge basin flanked with massive platane trees (which are said to be hundreds of years old!). This scene was featured in one of my favorite movies, A Good Year, with Russell Crowe and it provides great subject matter for any artist.

There is even more to paint as you walk inside the old walls of the village. A painter’s retreat, vraiment! There will be a painting session in the morning, followed by lunch at one of its many bistros, and more painting in the afternoon.

The Assistants!

To make your French art pilgrimage the full VIP experience we intend for you, we are providing a seasoned assistant, Andi Lea-Kraus. She provides a special touch that can range from having a bottle of water in-hand at the moment you become thirsty, to a heartfelt pep talk in a moment of creative paralysis or confrontation with your artist self. A writer and mixed media artist herself, Andi knows well the internal landscape of the creative mind, and having spent weeks in our little corner of France, she can navigate that, too! Andi has assisted multiple Alice Williams workshops in Provence, and has attended them stateside. She will be there every step of the way!

Don Williams is your co-host, co-facilitator, easel finagler, and all-around “can do” man. Having been married to a world-renowned plein aire painter for more than 50 years, Don has set up, schlepped, and broken down easels on more hillsides and windy fields than most of us can shake a stick at. Don will not only chat over coffee & stretch canvases by your side in the morning, but he will handle your shipping, accommodations, and any fix-it issues that may arise. Not to be outdone by the works of art created daily on workshop outings, Don has been known to share his soon-to-be-published poetry between courses at poolside dinners. His personality & warm heart will play a big part in your stay.
